Agribio Centre for AgriBioscience

AgriBio, Centre for AgriBioscience, is a major international facility for plant, animal and microbial biosciences and biosecurity research and diagnostics. Research at AgriBio spans the spectrum from strategic to applied science. Dr Mallik Malipatil is one of a team of SEM ‘super-users’ at AgriBio. Mallik is Principal Research Scientist in Invertebrate and Weed Sciences with Agriculture Victoria, and a joint appointee of Agriculture Victoria and La Trobe University. He said the SEM will help make the diagnosis of pests and pathogens faster and better.

“Some pests and pathogens are too complex for rapid molecular differentiation, but can be visually distinguished via the surface detail that is visible in SEM images.”

“Another advantage is that specimens don’t need to be coated for the SEM, so they can be returned to collections.”

High resolution and magnification are becoming increasingly important for examining early stages of pests and other pathogens, and existing optical / light microscopes are unable to meet this need.
